The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne is an oil painting on panel by LeonardoDaVinci (168x130 cm) dating to 1510-1513 and housed at the Louvre, Paris. The composition, rich in allegorical meanings, is effectively modeled according to a pyramidal shape in which the three generations of the family of Christ are depicted: St Anne, her daughter the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. Anna holds Mary on her knees while Mary is about to grab the Child while he plays with a lamb, a foreshadowing of the future Passion. St. Anne symbolizes here the Church which, hindering Mary's maternal apprehension, reaffirms the need for the voluntary sacrifice of Jesus. The subject also has a second version on cardboard, housed today at the National Gallery in London.
